Book Review

“The Allure of Hope -

God's pursuit of a woman's heart”

by Jan Meyers

Reviewer: Jean Dobson

This is a first book by Jan Meyers, a licensed counsellor with a BA in psychology and an MA in counselling. The book is skillfully written with a unique blend of theology, anecdotes and personal testimony. During its writing Jan lost a friend and mentor, faced a broken engagement and saw her home town of Los Alamos, New Mexico, burn. Hope in her own heart, and the two edged sword it can bring, was tested throughout the book's writing and is beautifully and courageously explored. A clear pattern emerges - the serpent's whisper of accusation against God's heart to Eve continues to impact women today. The book asks, "Does God really care for me?" and "Why has He allowed me to be dropped in this mess?" We join hands with Eve, are convinced, make choices and follow in her footsteps. The book is not an easy read, however for me this is the most profound insight by a woman into the race called womankind, whose mother is Eve. On a journey through the "path of hovering", "yearning for heaven" and "hope's attire" we finally come to the place of "sweet revenge", understanding that something may have carried us away, we might have been knocked and bruised, but God sees us and will take care of us - everything ultimately will be OK. This is a must read - and read again! A life changing experience. I'm slowly reading through the book again (I couldn't wait to get to the last page first time round) and savouring the gems on each of its pages!
