Book Review

‘Radical Reformission’

by Mark Driscoll

Reviewer: Andrew Evans

Mark Driscoll is the pastor of Mars Hill Church in Seattle and founder of the Acts 29 Church Planting Movement who is controversial for being culturally "liberal" and also believing that everything the Bible says is true is true. This book is his attempt to explain the convictions that lie behind his church network.

He writes from personal and church experience. His argument is that Christians need to love the Gospel, the culture in which we live and the local church and that the absence of one is disastrous.

"Reformissions" is Driscoll's label for what happens when people who believe the Bible rightly embrace all three of these loves. He shows how it will result in an approach to church that gives us a right view of missions. It is about living the life to which God has called you, loving people, being committed to your local church, inviting others into your Christian community and telling them about sin, God’s coming judgment, the cross, the resurrection and the new life of the Spirit.

This book is moving, clear, and thought provoking and comes from a man who has done the business when it comes to church and church planting. There are great questions at the end of each chapter and testimonies from tattoo artists, record producers, country singers, brewers and others who have been touched by this ministry and approach.

Although Driscoll is very funny this can sometimes distract from the seriousness of the points he is making. Overall though it's an excellent read - and a must read for anyone wanting their church to connect with C21st culture, especially in a big city.
