Book Review

“THE CASE FOR A CREATOR”

by Lee Strobel

Reviewer: John Cavanagh

Lee Strobel was educated at Yale Law School and was an award winning editor of the Chicago Tribune. His scientific upbringing and education caused him to turn his back on a belief in a God that he was firmly convinced was outmoded by Darwin's theory of evolution. Then in the 1980's his scepticism was challenged by his wife's conversion, and he began a journey of exploration which led him to faith, on the way writing a number of books, including: The Case for Christ & The Case for Faith. This third book is an analytical investigation into the truth or otherwise of Darwinism. It is done through a series of interviews Strobel had with highly qualified scientists & philosophers, and this approach makes it a more readable book, even though it deals with some very complex issues. As one person said about it, "It is proper science". And indeed the "cast" of interviewees include: a molecular & cell biologist, a cosmologist, a mathematician & physicist, an astronomer & a biochemist, amongst others.

Each chapter deals with a different scientific or philosophical discipline & has a short selection of further reading, and there is a full bibliography at the end. Strobel probes six different areas to see if they supported an Intelligent Designer for the universe. His conclusion was that, not only does science strongly support a Creator, but also that only the Christian God fits the evidence. A stretching, faith-building book for those interested in the relationship between science & faith.
