Book Review

“Still Learning To Love”

by Martin Hallet

Reviewer: John Cavanagh

Martin Hallett is the director of the True Freedom Trust (TfT), which he co-founded in 1977. It is a Christian support and teaching ministry offering hope and help to men and women struggling with homosexuality, lesbianism and similar issues.

The book is less about TfT and more about Martin although the two are intertwined. He was involved in a homosexual lifestyle for over nine years before Jesus dramatically changed his life in 1972. The book explores what that change meant to Martin and the journey he's been on since then. It pulls no punches in looking at what the homosexual life style really means and is absolutely honest and open in the struggle to come to terms with that as a Christian. Martin tells of his new faith and experience and his real thirst for God's word. The Lord also gave him a new desire to help other people, which resulted in the foundation of TfT when the Lord said to him "You will be setting others free".

At one point in the book Martin says "I am almost certainly biased" (well who isn't?) before going on to express his particular take on what it means when a homosexual becomes a Christian. This comes out of over thirty years of God using him in this whole field of ministry. Michaelangelo said when he was 87 "I am still learning" - so is Martin. Its great to have a book about a local ministry which is commended by so many.
