Book Review

“My Story”

by Selwyn Hughes

Reviewer: Sue Wilding

This is Selwyn’s own version of events and provides a fascinating insight into the life of someone known principally as a writer of the ‘Every Day with Jesus’ notes. Selwyn, whose name means ‘clear voice’ was born in South Wales in 1928. When he was dedicated his uncle prayed that he would become a preacher. As a child he would hear the older generation reminisce about the days of the Welsh Revival, punctuating the conversation with prayers like, ‘Oh God, Do it again!’ Selwyn did become a preacher and was known as ‘the revival boy’ and later in life founded the Campaign for World Revival.

The book takes us through his conversion at 16, to his 18 years of being a pastor, his travels and involvement in Christian counselling. Perhaps one of the less well-known facts about him is that he used to run a low-cost travel business and also conducted tours to the Holy Land with his friend Trevor Partridge. He speaks honestly about this relationship which was used so powerfully by God and about the vision they both shared for Waverley Abbey, a conference centre which opened in 1987 and is still being used today.

The book is notable for its honesty and the clarity. Selwyn does not mince words about the tragedies and failures in his life but says that he has learned more from his troubles than from his successes. It was an inspiration to read, and challenges the reader to become sold-out to Jesus as Selwyn is.
