Book Review

“The Wedge of Truth”

by Phillip E Johnson

Reviewer: John Cavanagh

In this book Phillip Johnson is seeking to address the difference between two definitions of science. On the one hand science can be said to be the practice of impartial empirical evidence and testing. However for many, he maintains, it has become a partisan adherence to a philosophy of naturalism. The author expresses his concern about how overpowering this philosophy has become in the twentieth century as it comes with all the authority of “science says”.

The book is an investigation into the cultural conflict that this has caused in the USA, although many of the insights and conclusions have relevance in the UK too. Johnson sees that the teaching of evolution as a fact is a means to introduce a godless philosophy into the education system. He shows how by any realistic definition this is an extremely dogmatic pseudo religion and he gives examples of that. He goes on to talk about the intellectual bankruptcy of Darwinism and how Darwinian science has come to a dead end.

This is a stimulating book, which makes the case for Intelligent Design cogently. A central plank to his argument in this book is the need for new information at the cell level that chance and natural selection don’t provide. The Wedge in the title is an informal movement of like-minded thinkers with a strategy to bring these issues into public debate. Charles Colson’s introduction says, “By asking the right questions (he) brilliantly exposes the fault lines of the reigning Darwinian orthodoxy. It cuts to the heart of the most crucial issue of our day”.
