Book Review

I Wish I Was

by Anona Coates

Reviewer: John Cavanagh

Anona Coates is the wife of Pioneer leader Gerald Coates. She was born just after the Second World War, and was abused by the man she thought was her father. She was so unhappy that, when a friend suggested that she was adopted she replied, “I wish I was”. Hence the title of the book.

This is the story of how, many years later, Anona discovered that she was indeed adopted and began the search for her birth parents. On the surface this is a book about one person’s life story, and as such it is a good read that flows well and is easy and enjoyable to get through. It is a moving story about how one person coped with rejection and abuse and loneliness. It flies along at a cracking pace. There are some surprises in the story – it almost reads like a fictional adventure at times as Anona first gets an unexpected revelation about her family and then sets about, detective-like,
to uncover the truth about her past. As the story unfolds even more surprises awaited her.

Underneath the story there is a deeper layer about how the Lord can take and heal and restore and use someone regardless of their origins and life experiences. It is an encouraging story, full of God’s provision and grace. A good book to read over the holidays!
