Born Again Buildings

Kings Church Wirral’s building in Victoria Fields, Birkenhead doesn’t look like it used to! In the1980s the congregation led by Pastor Ivor Hopkins were looking for a base for their activities and purchased the building that was formerly St Joseph’s RC Primary School for £35,000.

The school had been closed for a number of years, and the building had been allowed
to run into semi-dereliction. Current Pastor, Colin Orr, remembers working on the building after they had purchased it from the Council. “I remember the water damaged wood block floors very well.” It was his job to clean off the old, black tar from the bottoms of the blocks – something he won’t forget in a hurry!

Not only was the floor completely refurbished (with fresh tar on the blocks!), but new suspended ceilings were installed, and the original hall, corridor and dining room were redesigned to give a spacious and welcoming entrance hall and an auditorium that seats four hundred people.

With dedication and hard work, amazingly the congregation moved in after less than a year, and the building was officially opened in 1985 by the Mayor of Wirral.

The church is used for many events, including Christmas meals and International Evenings featuring food from various cultures. A coffee bar has been running for some time, and there are plans to make it into a community facility for those living around the church. There is also a very successful Parents and Toddlers Group.

As well as the main rooms, the building contains three class-rooms, two of which were used by member Tony Holland (famous for Opportunity Knocks) to run a gym until he retired. Upstairs there is storage for clothes and food for the homeless programme, Acts4U.
