Book Review

A LINEAGE OF GRACE

by Francine Rivers

Reviewer: Sue Wilding

It has always fascinated me that there are five women mentioned in the family tree of Jesus to which our attention is often drawn at Advent. Francine Rivers calls them five unlikely women who changed eternity!

Tamar is called a woman of hope and her chapter title is ‘Unveiled’. Having been treated despicably by Judah’s family she resorts to trickery to become pregnant by her father-in- law. Such a story seems unworthy of being included in Christ’s ancestry but her tenacity pays off and one of her twins become part of the royal line which leads to His birth.

Rahab is called a woman of faith and her chapter title is ‘Unashamed’. A prostitute who plies her trade along the walls of the doomed city of Jericho seems another unlikely candidate to become an ancestor of Christ. But when God awakens Rahab’s heart she insists on being included in the destiny of God’s people. Her reward is to be rescued from the destruction of Jericho and to marry into the Jewish nation.

Ruth is called a woman of love and her chapter title is ‘Unshaken’. The beautiful story of Ruth describes how the unbelief of Naomi’s husband and the tragedies of her life are redeemed by God. Ruth’s refusal to abandon her mother-in-law and determination to emulate her faith lead to marriage with Boaz. The son born to them was to be the grandfather of King David.

Bathsheba is called a woman of unlimited grace and her chapter title is ‘Unspoken’. For me this is the most controversial of the stories as Bathsheba is described as having some complicity in David’s sin. Despite being eventually taken into his home as his legitimate wife, her life is never easy. She loses her first husband and the first son she bears to David. She suffered a great deal from the hatred and jealousy of other members of his family. However God graciously forgives her and David, giving them another son, Solomon who was to know the favour of God.

Mary is called a woman of obedience and her chapter title is ‘Unafraid’. Mary is such a well-known character that we tend to take her faith and obedience for granted. The author examines the turmoil she often felt as her son, Jesus, was rejected. Her suffering and self-sacrifice continue through times when she senses Him distancing Himself from their special relationship to include many more in the family of God.
